"If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need."
Marcus Tullius Cicero

During the last 50 years, the population on Earth has more than doubled, yet the amount of land we have devoted to farming has stayed the same. At the same time, it is estimated that the world will reach over 9 billion people by the year 2050. How will we feed all of these additional people in a sustainable manner?

Nourishing the Planet in the 21st Century curriculum is a teaching tool aimed at helping teachers and students explore one central issue:

How can we ensure the earth's growing population can be fed sustainably in the coming decades?

Find the solution inside the Nourishing the Planet in the 21st Century curriculum.

What does NFL offer teachers?

Nourishing the Planet in the 21st Century and a Nutrients for Life Learning Garden can help students investigate how nutrients can be applied to improve crop growth, and help feed people while protecting the environment, while achieving four major goals associated with scientific literacy:

  • To understand a set of basic elements related to food production
  • To experience the process of scientific inquiry and develop an enhanced understanding of the nature and methods of science
  • To hone critical thinking skills
  • To recognize the role of science and in society and the relationship between basic science and human health
